Project details
670 km south of the capital Santiago de Chile. Here in this picturesque area is your working holiday place. The hostel is still very new and opened in early 2024. The owner is a former participant in our working holiday programs who has had the same experience as so many visitors to Chile. He fell in love with the country and decided to settle here years ago. With the hostel in Malalcahuello, he has fulfilled a dream.
The hostel where the working holiday program takes place has 11 simple guest rooms and can accommodate up to 25 people.
The area around the town of Malalcahuello is like a fairy tale and exudes a very special magic. Nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts will enjoy themselves here. In winter (beginning from June to mid-September) Malalcahuello is a very popular ski resort. The ski area on the volcano is relatively small, but offers great slopes and, above all, a great panoramic view of the surrounding forests, volcanoes and mountains.
In summer, hikers and mountain bikers come to Malalcahuello to enjoy the routes in the beautiful Araucaria forests.
Tasks
The tasks in this working holiday are varied and give you a good insight into how a hostel works. You will support a small, young team in all tasks related to looking after the guests and maintaining the hostel.
It is a small operation, which is why it is important to help where help is needed. You help to welcome the guests and show them the hostel. It is also important to inform the guests about excursion options, sights and activities in the hostel. Social media is the be-all and end-all of every company today. Maintaining social media channels can also be one of your tasks. To ensure that everyone feels comfortable and at home, room service, cleaning and helping with breakfast are also part of the job.
The working hours are around 35 hours per week (can be a little more or less depending on the season and workload). The shifts and working hours are agreed on site as needed. Two days per week are free, but these do not always have to fall on a weekend. You can use these days to relax and explore the surroundings on your own, go hiking or skiing in winter.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Accommodation
Our participants live in the hostel itself, in a room specially designed for the participants, equipped with a bunk bed and shared bathroom. A maximum of 2 places are available for working holiday participants.
Internet Wi-Fi (StarLINK) is available and can be used outside of working hours.
The working holiday program includes breakfast in the hostel. You start your day with a delicious continental breakfast and the smell of coffee in your nose. Lunch and dinner are not included, but you can use the hostel kitchen to store your groceries and prepare meals. There are shops nearby.
Location
Malacahuello, located in the Araucanía region in southern Chile, is a pretty little town surrounded by forests, mountains and volcanoes. The area offers a fascinating mix of nature, culture and history. Surrounded by volcanic activity with great thermal springs, dense forests and the impressive Andes Cordillera, it is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The Llaima and Lonquimay volcanoes dominate the landscape and offer spectacular views.
The area is covered by dense araucaria forests. These ancient trees are a symbol of the region and offer a unique habitat for numerous animal species. Hot springs invite you to relax. The thermal baths of Curacautín are known for their healing effects and offer a welcome change after an active day.
The Mapuche culture is deeply rooted in the region. Here you can learn a lot about the history and traditions of this indigenous people that are still alive today.
In the winter months, the area is transformed into a winter wonderland. There are several ski resorts nearby that are suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers. There is no better way to relax your soul than in a combination of snow and hot thermal baths.
